Man, this session gave me goosebumps. Sam came to me by way of another single parent I had shot a few months before, Kathryn Rice. Sam is a single dad with two beautiful daughters. His spirit is loving, kind, generous, and all around awesome! I was ecstatic when Sam reached out. Let’s be real, I know it’s not definitive, but how many dads, married or single really take it upon themselves to do family photos. I think what’s more impressive to me was how this dad got himself and two little girls looking so good for their session. I mean I am a dad of two boys, and getting them looking handsome is always an interesting and difficult task.
So let me touch on why I got goosebumps from this shoot. As mentioned above most of my family sessions of the “ideal” family unit; A mother a father and a child or more are booked, outfits coordinated, dressed, and pinterest conceptualized all by… You guessed it, MOM! This by no means is a bad thing. Mom’s are freaking amazing. Even when my family takes pictures my wife is the one to do the outfit shopping. What I am trying to get at is how refreshing and amazing it is to see a different dynamic. Seeing a father step up and just want pictures of him and his kiddos regardless of the fact that it does not fit the “ideal” family unit.
Let me be clear in saying “ideal” family unit is not MY personal ideal family unit. As a photographer my job is to capture RAW life moments. Whether that be husband + wife, wife + wife, husband + husband, single mother or single father. I am a photographer wanting to provide a safe place to be and express yourself.
Regardless of my opinions, I can not speak for my client and his truths
